## What the book does

Rather than focusing on the technology itself, Rewired examines what organisations need to change to deliver meaningful value. It draws on McKinsey’s experience leading large-scale digital and AI transformations. This second edition reflects how much has changed since the original publication in 2023\. It now incorporates generative AI, AI agents, new ways of developing software, and the changing relationship between people and technology. The book also brings its framework to life through case studies from organisations including Toyota, DBS, Freeport-McMoRan and LATAM Airlines.

## What it changes in practice

The book does not expect directors to become technology or AI experts; rather, it aims to support a sufficient understanding of what credible transformation looks like to challenge the quality of management's choices and execution. Shifting the conversation from ‘*what are we doing with AI*?’ to ‘*where will it create value and are we equipped to deliver it*?’

## Why I recommend it

Rewired is a framework to support strategic decision-making, with the goal of sustainable value creation by delivering enhanced performance. This is a practical tool: the title calls it a playbook, and the authors describe it as *a working manual.*

The approach has proven a useful resource for board strategy days and working groups, helping structure discussions around risks and opportunities, and whether management’s ambitions align with the investment, data, talent and operating model needed to deliver them.

Specifically, while establishing NEDness as an AI-first business, the focus on risk, trust, and the right to deploy in chapter 24 offered valuable input as we built our cyber, data, and technology policies, ensuring they address the new-era risks we face in launching and growing our governance ecosystem.

The book is detailed and very McKinsey in style, with plenty of frameworks, so some may prefer to use it selectively rather than reading cover to cover. Directors of smaller organisations will also need to apply judgement to adapt the approach to their organisation's size, maturity, and resources.

## Who it suits

Suitable for all board directors and executives responsible for AI and tech transformation, including those ‘*who feel the weight of responsibility but not yet the comfort of fluency in technology’* (Rewired 2026). The chapters are organised so readers can focus on those most relevant to their role or when facing a specific challenge.
