Our origins
NEDness evolved from interview feedback for a chair appointment. Our founder, with more than a decade of experience across executive and non-executive directorships, was told she wouldn’t be taken forward to the next round, as she needed to work on her "nedness". The word was unfamiliar; however, she understood the messaging. What it meant in practice, and where she should go to learn about and develop the requisite skills, was less than straightforward.
/ˈnednəs/ noun
the essential qualities and mindset needed to excel as a non-executive director; the art of independent thinking, constructive challenge, and governance wisdom
She was not alone. Much of what is needed to support becoming and remaining an effective non-executive director is out there somewhere; however, it is fragmented, opaque, and often inaccessible to the very people modern boards need most.
This was the driver to create something different.
Our vision
What we offer
The NED landscape is well served for recruitment, training, and advisory services individually. NEDness is different: a single ecosystem designed to support the entire NED journey. We position ourselves as complementary to, not competitive with, established governance institutions and solution providers.
‘NEDs need access to their own independent resources and sources of insight.’

Consequently, NEDness fills a distinct gap by providing:
Clarity
Contemporary, accessible insight without institutional formality.
Community
Community and conversation that reflect modern board practice.
Capability
Practical capability-building that NEDs can use immediately.
Human-authored content
Everyone is welcome
Whether you are working towards a first appointment, finding your feet on a board, running a portfolio of several roles, serving as a trustee, or strengthening your own corporate governance with non-executive expertise, you are who this was built for.
It's not about tenure. Everyone in the community benefits from sharing their expertise and experience. Someone who joined a board last year with deep knowledge of cybersecurity or artificial intelligence may be exactly the person a twenty-year veteran needs to hear from.
We are intentionally global.
Boards today are governing unprecedented technological change, ensuring their organisation can withstand disruption, and making strategy resilient to a less predictable world. In this context, communicating best practices and lessons learnt across geographies simply makes sense.
Confidentiality
The commercial model
NEDness is a data-driven, AI-first business. We are privately funded, so we can stay true to our values and focus on building our digital ecosystem, community and trust. Then, we will leverage these assets, offering our commercial partners access to a qualified audience and anonymised data insights that are otherwise hard to access.
Revenue flowing from these partnership programs will fund the ecosystem; the community uses it. This is the foundation of the data flywheel: a free, open community generates the engagement and the structured insight that partners value, and partners fund the infrastructure that keeps the community free.

Independence
Independence is one thing we would never compromise. No partner can buy influence over what we publish, over our research conclusions, or over our editorial priorities, and every commercial relationship is disclosed. Partner relationships and sponsored content will always be identified as such.
